I just aquired two Klipsch KG 3,5 mini towers and two Klipsch KG4's for the mains, What a difference using these effecient vintage speakers on tube outputs. Most of the new breed of new speakers are digital inclined.meaning high clip ratings and low effecienty so they can handel the high watts that high end recievers boast about. As Ian said these numbers are to suit the mfgs. and misslead the consumers.
But back to my experience the tube outputs are better matched to the quality vintage speakers of yesteryear.and Ian I now understand of the soudstage being to the rear as of to the front using tubes. Thanks for bending your ears.Do yourself a favor if on a buget watch e-bay and pick a pair of good quality vintage speakers to comliment your tube amps performance,Good luck and Good listening, Bryon _________________ I enjoy the replys to my questions and comments from Grant Fidelity. Also respect the info gained from people like me on the member list! |

Great, I owned the KG4's for years and always enjoyed them, interesting design, still have my KG2's. Currently use the Mission 750's with the GF A-34 amp and GF CD-427.
I've been testing a lot of new speakers lately and there is something to be said for them as the tweeters are cleaner, but this whole tuned bass thing with small drivers still has my ears a bit confused.
I guess an audiophile will generally go for new and a music lover will generally go for old, which is what I do, grab some beer and hook up the Missions or Klipschs and crank the A-34 to 7. That said when I switch back to a new speaker the difference is very noticable, in a good way.
Thanks for the post, good to hear from you, had a great trip to China, lots of affordable new goodies.
Ian

I have long been a fan of vintage speakers, there is excellent value to be had. I have owned many of the classics including ESL-57, HPM-100, Tannoy, Goodmans, Bozak, Large Advent, NS-1000M, Magneplanar, the list goes on.
As a new dealer of Grant Fidelity, I look forward to trying the tube amps with all the speakers I can, but after demoing them with a pair of Tannoy Super Red Monitors, I'm not sure if I want to........
But we do have a set of KG-4 coming soon so I will be able to relate to you Bryon

All of the Grant amps have a 4 and 8 ohm tap so there should be no problem with most speakers. If you do have an inefficient speaker, like an 85-86 db speaker, then I'd suggest going with the higher power amps.
I've tried the A-534B with a pair of Chartwells which are a pretty hard speaker to drive and I found that the 10 watts were not enough. Paired with a set of 96db Altecs and the 10 watts is plenty.
What I've found is that with a tube amp, the volume goes up but it doesn't sound the same as when you turn up the volume of a SS amp. I think it's becasue it sounds better loud that you don't realize how loud it is. _________________ ThatOldRetroStore
