We have done extensive testing and have found that it sounds excellent with the volume control activated and the benefits of being able to adjust the output again adds to the flexibility of this do-it-all box . If you are a purist and don't want another volume control in the chain, simply follow the very simple PDF modification instructions down this page.

'So there you have it. A well built Tube DAC that can raise the level of budget players without breaking the bank, leaving you more money to spend on your vinyl rig. I don’t want this to sound like those “it’s good for the money” reviews because while that is true, it offers more than that. It offers a musically satisfying presentation over the all-too-common by-the-numbers approach in the sub $1,000 digital world. It produces an enjoyable listening experience that virtually anyone can afford. I can’t think of a CD front-end or a stand-alone preamp at this price that I like the sound of more than Tube DAC-09. And this unit does both! It offers a lot for a little.'

Richard Austin - Dagogo. Full review here

'My previous experiences with budget DAC’s have left me with the realization that much improvement was needed for them to be a part of a serious-sounding main rig. The Grant Fidelity TubeDAC-09 undeniably brings life and a third dimension to music. This DAC isn’t for the faint-of-heart or those that want hear a polite presentation. The TubeDAC-09 is a turbo-charger for those that like music up front and moving forward'

High fidelity design with budget in mind. This vacuum Tube Digital-to-Analog Converter will connect you with modern media storage technology closer without sacrificing any bit of sound quality.

It is a 5-in-1 unit: can be used as 1) external USB DAC for laptop, 2) headphone amp, 3) tube processor for analog signal, 4) digital decoder for optical and coaxial signal, 5) tube preamp to drive your power amps with a simple jumper switch change.

You can use it directly with your digital source such as laptop and music server and play music back through your existing amplifier or powered speakers. Or you can simply get a pair of high quality headphones and enjoy the music in private!

Breath new life into your older CD or DVD players either by connecting them to the digital or analog inputs. Turn your Blue Ray Player into a higher-end music/audio player.

Computer game music will also become less fatiguing with the tube processing of the TubeDAC-09.

If you need a low cost tube pre-amplifier, the TubeDAC-09 can do that for you as well with a simple user internal modification, or we can mod it for you prior to shipping. Those who only need a DAC will appreciate not introducing an unneeded volume control in the signal chain.

Note that as shipped as a line level DAC, the TubeDAC-09 volume knob only controls the headphone output, do not hook up to a power amplifier until you have changed the jumpers which then results in volume knob controlling all outputs.

The single most asked question: What is the grease looking stuff on the DAC case when I first open my package?

Answer: It is protective wax applied for storage (the factory is located in the quite humid part of China) and sea shipping in case salty air gets into the package to cause rust or erosion. You can use a soft cloth to wipe it then the unit becomes shiny - overtime the wax will disappear (like car wax).

Tube rolling experience

Tube rolling experience shared by customer Glynn T:

" I settled on a NOS Western Electric 396A / 2C51 (WE)  tube.  Night and Day.  It sounds absolutely wonderful now.  The sound out of the solid state outputs was always dead on, a lot better than the DAC in my receiver."

This tube is available at the tubedepot.com.

6 out of 7 preferred the TubeDAC-09 :)

"The sound of this little DAC is amazing especially when used as a Tube preamp on an SS amp (mine is hooked up to a Carver M-400t cube and a pair of Minimus 7 speakers with the crossover upgrade in my desktop system). It is dead quiet (unlike most other preamps I have used, both Tube and SS) and in a recent higher priced CDP shootout that took place at my house and hooked up as a preamp on my Sunfire 300X2, was actually preferred to the Benchmark DAC-01 by 6 of the 7 other people who were in attendance in all of the sound qualities we were listening for."

'The depth of sound stage is amazing'

Feedback from customer Darren H. by email:

Have been listening to the new DAC, and I am very impressed. One major step to getting the sound out my computer I have been searching for. The depth of sound stage is amazing, a very realistic presentation.... One of best money I have spent on sound, Thanks Darren.

"I am your newest happy customer"

From a happy customer Ed L by email:

Rachel and Ian,

My DAC arrived at 2:15 and was playing at 2:18, If it never sounds better then right now I'm your newest happy customer!!!
Right out of the box it has totally expanded the soundstage from my Squeezebox Duet, the music is all around me and very
dimensional with excellent detail and easy to listen to tonal qualities!! I was a professional musician for most of my life and
endeavored long and hard to give a precise yet emotional presentation of the music I was asked to play, many times after playing
our heart out we would anxiously await playback to hear the brilliance we had created only to have our hopes dashed by a lifeless
recording. This unit does a fabulous job of bringing that emotion back, presenting it very musically, and with smooth precision.
 Thank you!!
 Ed

 Thanks Ed, as a musician

Thanks Ed, as a musician you will appreciate that I spent many years recording musicians, all our gear passes this test. I also worked with Reality and SeerMusic which was an amazing digital music instrument and you should hear what it sounds like thru the TubeDAC-09 digital inputs, if you know of anyone using digital instruments do let them check it out, they will thank you. Btw, do use the analog inputs when recording, awesome results, especially if recording to digital, leaves the even order harmonics we love in the tracks !

Cheers,

Ian

Enjoying TubeDAC-09 as is!!

 Ian,

I'm enjoying the DAC-09 as a component in my system and rolling tubes etc. So far it has outperformed my expectations and delivered wonderful "Golden" toned music to my ears. I look forward to seeing what new things Grant has in its pipeline!!

Enjoy the music..I am!!!

"Terrific unit for the price"

- received via email from customer Mike C.

Hi Rachel & Ian

I just received the DAC -09 this weekend and I wanted to thank your for the fast service and to let you know that I think this is a terrific unit for the price.

In reality it is currently working in the pre-amp mode driving a vintage Quad 306 and B&W DM 12 Speakers. The source is my Apple iMAC for now. This really wakes up the sound from the computer and gives a great second system. The detail is very good and it is getting better each hour. I also have the benefit of a good sounding head phone amp with it.

So far I am very impressed with it and I can't wait to use it as a pre for a more powerful amp to see what it can do.

Awesome product and great price!!!

Cheers;

Mike.

DAC-09

Received my DAC-09 about two weeks ago and so far I am very pleased. Currently using as a DAC between Computer and receiver via Optical connection. I will try other connections down the road. My first Grant purchase and probably not my last given this experience !

"it was surprisingly close to the presentation of the Cary"

navac has just posted in the Grant Fidelity forum of AudioKarma.org Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums under the title of DAC 09 Impressions.

This thread is located at http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=253150

Here is the message that has just been posted:
***************
Usual disclaimer: my ears, my setup, YMMV.

I recently purchased a DAC 09 and wanted to share my impressions. I set it up and started listening with my Grado GS-1000 headphones. It sounded good right out of the box. I compared the headphone output to the RA-1 amplifier and found it to be decent. The grado amplifier came out on top by being more solid in its presentation and more even accross the frequency spectrum. The built in amp gave a little treble heavy, slightly less full performance; however, it performed very well for the price point.

Next, I went to a friends to compare the DAC 09 to his Cary 306/200 cd player. That setup consisted of s/pdif cables from the Cary to the DAC, then to a Musical Fidelity A-300 (Gold trim) integrated, and finally to B&W 705 speakers. After listening for a while, we began comparing the dacs. The DAC 09 was surprisingly close to the presentation of the Cary! They both sounded very full and detailed, but the Cary was more refined. This led to a tighter sound from the Cary with more separation. That being said, we really had to listen to pinpoint the differences which you generally don't have to do when comparing a $400 dac to a $2000 (used) cd player. As expected the Cary won the day, but if you don't have $2000 and already have a decent transport, the DAC 09 is very good value.

TubeDAC

Met my needs for a good quality sound card for computer applications & component upgrade for older DVD player. Only other readily available & comparable options in Vancouver area were the Cambridge Audio's DACMagic for around $500 and barebones V-DAC for $400 (before tax).  Both options lacked the versatility of the TubeDAC. Great product and good price!

Keep up the good work.

Kyle
